While we do use an older integration method for PayPal Payments Standard, our contacts at PayPal have assured us they have no firm plans to retire or deprecate that method anytime soon. Most likely that email you received was just trying to "upsell" you to an extra-cost service upgrade with PayPal.
That said, our Devs are working on implementing PayPal's latest integration method, for future-proofing and various other improvements that would come along with that, such as the option for buyers to fund their PayPal payment via Venmo, GooglePay, ApplePay, etc.
